Compensation

  • Hourly, Based on experience
  • Pay Frequency: Weekly
  • Overtime Pay

Schedule

  • 8-12 hour shift (this is just an average – changes depending on the day)
  • Start time: (Usually 6:30am – subject to change)
  • On call
  • Weekends as needed

  • May involve traveling and overnight stays to other parts of the US

Job Summary

  • Fiber Optics Locator is responsible for identifying and marking buried fiber optic cable, electrical cables and conduits by referencing utility prints / plans and using specific locating equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities·

  • Read and understand utility maps, prints, and aerial imagery to assist in identification of underground fiber assets.
  • Prioritize work activities by reviewing all locate requests to determine travel route and timelines.
  • Operate handheld detection equipment in the designed manner.
  • Periodically remove and replace manhole lids, weighing between 20 - 100 pounds, using a manhole cover removal tool.
  • Mark the location of underground fiber and electrical assets on roadways, private property, and other locations, as appropriate and needed, using required spray paints, flags and other equipment.
  • Daily contact with utility managers, crews, and contractors discussing locate issues.
  • Weekly equipment inspections.
  • Need to be aware that daily reports are required each day.
  • Follows direction of the Jobsite Foreman, Superintendent, and/or Area Manager for project schedules, materials, equipment, and crews.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management.
  • Enter data into GIS databases, using techniques such as coordinate geometry, keyboard entry of tabular data, manual digitizing of maps, scanning or automatic conversion to vectors, or conversion of other sources of digital data.
  • Review existing or incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality, and completeness of documentation.
  • Operate handheld GPS units in the designed manner

Job Requirements

  • The characteristics required to fill this position is of a self-starter that is task oriented, logical, detail-oriented person with excellent troubleshooting skills and the ability to interface and communicate with customers clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to work in all types of terrain and hazards (grass, gravel, ditches, etc.), all types of environments (construction sites, highways, industrial, private property, etc.) and all types of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift 85lbs with the help of another, climb ladders, work with heights up to 30 ft., and in tight or enclosed spaces.
  • Must be available for evening work on occasion.
  • The work can take place on new construction sites or existing occupied facilities and may include carrying and moving parts and equipment.
  • Accurately and consistently wear safety gear, and operate safety equipment, provided.
  • Some computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Job Requires travel throughout the Southeast United States. PCS requires men to room 2 to a room when traveling in Company provided hotels/short term lodging.
  • Must be 21 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license, a clean record and be insurable with our auto insurance carrier during course of employment.

Experience: Education & Certifications

  • High school diploma and two (2) years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college work or vocational or technical training program in electronics or communications may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Other recognized certifications that would be a plus would include BICSI, IMSA, ETA, Fiber Optic Association, Maintenance of Traffic, Forklift, OSHA and CPR.
